      Many of the names used in the sword arts are allready charged with meaning beforehand. That is why you find the same names in many arts and schools often for very different forms. Even just within Musô Shinden Ryû you have different names for obviously the same forms. And these are not just different people naming them, but Nakayama Hakudô himself used different names at different points of his life. I asume this reflects a development rather than whimsy.

    From what school comes the techniques you use for your tameshigiri?

    • @Muso-Shinden-Ryu
      @Muso-Shinden-Ryu 5 лет назад

      We don´t practise tameshigiri. Just Iaidô and Kendô. But we are interested. Acording to Nakayama Hakudô Hanshi you should train Iaidô and just do tameshigiri, accepting the result as the level of your expertise in order not to develop bad habits in swordsmanship. This is what we tried here. We loosely use the names of Toyama Ryû to describe the cut sequence.

  • @senbonzakuya
    @senbonzakuya 5 лет назад

    What are these? Are these pre world war kendo throwing techniques?

    • @Muso-Shinden-Ryu
      @Muso-Shinden-Ryu 5 лет назад

      Possibly, but probably not. This is our own development. But we based this on the writings of Takano Sasaburo Hanshi, which are surely pre world war II. When he writes about Kumiuchi, he basically refers to the waza of Jûdô, which in his time was probably more like Jûjutsu. In his opinion you need to study Jûdô, to have the waza. We no longer do so, but we did Jûdô/Jûjutsu in our youth, so we felt confident to adapt the simpler waza to Bôgu, specifically Kote. More importantly Takano Sasaburo Hanshi writes about Kumiuchi, the grappling being always secondary to the Sword/Shinai. One valid reason for Kumiuchi is the stalemate of the Tsubazeriai,(We have a playlist for those waza also) The other is loss of weapon, which is the theme of these videos. When your opponent ist disarmed you don´t play around, but strike immediately. Also when you are disarmed you initiate a grapple immediately. Finally when you are grappled, you don´t fixate on your useless sword, but countergrapple. We categorized this in terms of relative Maai, like it ist done in Musô Shinden Ryû Kumitachi, which we study primarily as well as ZNKR Kendô and Iaidô. When you include Kumiuchi in modern Kendôis has to be reglemented as such, otherwise it takes the lead. Much like competitive Kendô destroyes it´s essence if pursued to it´s extremes.

    3 "steps" forward? with 2 steps you are free of the roof I belief?

    • @Muso-Shinden-Ryu
      @Muso-Shinden-Ryu 6 лет назад

      The obstacles are as imaginary as the enemy. 3 steps, 2 steps or even 1 step could take you from your imagined place "below the shelf" to a place where freedom of movement overhead is unrestricted. You might even do the whole thing backwards. The only important consideration is the mindset, that what you are doing is normal behaviour in low areas and your kirioroshi conforms to the riai foe exiting low areas. As I see it, there are 2 distinct aproaches that emphasize different aspects of keiko. No1: You draw your sword below the shelf and exit with kirioroshi. The movement is more physically challenging the longer you crouchwalk like this. This is done in this video. No.2: you crouchwalk with the undrawn sword, draw and cut timed with your exit.Both are equally valid in my mind.

    We made these 50 Videos in 2009. Many people have watched them, some have even commented. From those comments we must assume, that at least some people have misunderstood what the 50 videos are about. That is on us, since we have not included an explanation. We regularly practice contemporary Kendô according to the Zen Nihon Kendô Renmei. But these 50 Videos are not contemporary Kendô! In 2009 we came across the “Kendô Kyôhon”, a book by Takano Sasaburo Hanshi from the year 1930. Therein in describes among other things the (in his opinion) 50 essential techniques of Kendô. These 50 Videos are our attempt to reconstruct these 50 techniques according to the brief description he provides, only limited by our ability to make them succeed. Some of these techniques are not commonly done today, some are done differently today and others just go by different names today. In all our uploaded videos we always follow the same rule: When we are interested in a topic we look for videos. If we cannot find the topic or not in the desired format at the time, we consider uploading a video of our efforts. We appreciate, if you find our videos interesting or even helpful. Educating criticism is also welcome, but if you have something to contribute we ask you to upload a video of your own and make it accessible to us. We cannot improve by your opinions alone and frankly lack the time to try.
